EARL HENRY TOPIC AND COURSE DESCRIPTION:
“Occlusal Considerations and Clinical
Tips in Restorative Dentistry”
It has been well documented that occlusal forces to teeth during
nocturnal bruxism are in excess of 20 to 30 times the forces exerted during
chewing. We must accept the fact that we cannot stop people from bruxing.
As dental health professionals, it is our job to properly organize the
mechanics of occlusion so as to minimize or eliminate these destructive
forces during times of bruxing. If these forces are not controlled, the consequences
can range from severely worn teeth, fractured cusps, mobile teeth,
fatigued muscles, TMD symptoms, loss of overloaded implant fixtures to
broken veneers and numerous types of restorative failures. All our restorative
efforts can be compromised or lost from the phenomenal forces of
Nocturnal Bruxism.
Attendees will learn:
- Occlusion is the common denominator that must be dealt with in restorative
dentistry.
- The excessive forces of nocturnal bruxism are responsible for many
restorative failures and ways to neutralize these forces must be provided for
the patient.
- When, why and how to use occlusal splints in TMD Therapy and as a
prophylactic measure to protect restored cases.
- Everyday clinical tips and techniques that consistently work for the
restorative dentist.

Fishing Rodeo at Watts Bar
2007
marks 30 years the Second District Dental
Society's Fishing Rodeo has been held
at Watts Bar Resort located next to Watts
Bar Dam on the Tennessee River. As far
as anyone can remember, the first Dental
Fishing Rodeo was held after World War
II by a few dentists who enjoyed fishing.
Thereafter, each year the group would
go to a different local TVA lake.
While he was President of the Second District
Dental Society Ben
Alley appointed me as chairman of
the fishing rodeo in a joking manner in
an effort to get me to attend the local
dental meetings. Ben
loved to fish, and I don't think he ever
missed a fishing rodeo. I had been to
Watts Bar Resort for family summer vacations
several times and had gotten to know the
owners, Joyce and Ed Probst. The location
was accessible to most of our members
so the rodeo was held there at Watts Bar
Resort.
Slowly, through the years the Rodeo evolved
into a family event. Many of our members
only attend one local dental meeting each
year, the Second District Dental Rodeo.
At some point through the years, Ben
named me "Permanent Chairman"
of the rodeo. However, the rodeo is and
has always been a committee- or group-sponsored
event.
About 10 years ago, Don Chase and Gary
McCown began a kid's fishing class to
teach the children of Second District
members the finer skills of fly fishing.
Since the second rodeo at Watts Bar, Dr.
David Etnier, UT professor of zoology
and nationally known ichthyologist has
been our judge. Later, Sam Venable, questionable
writer for the Knoxville News Sentinel
and Bill Landry, narrator for the Channel
10 award winning "Heartland Series,"
have helped to make the rodeo a success.
Our fishing rodeo is more about memories than about fishing.
It is a time of fellowship with our colleagues that live forever.
If you have never attended you must. Plan to take your family
to Watts Bar Lake.
Marshall Parker
Permanent Chairman
