Brief History of
William M. Bass, PhD.; D-ABFA; Professor Emeritus
William M. Bass is a U.S. forensic anthropologist,
renowned for his research on human osteology and human
decomposition. He has also assisted federal, local, and non-US authorities in the identification of human remains. He
taught at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, and
though currently retired from teaching, still plays an active
research role at the Forensic Anthropology Research Facility,
which he founded. The Facility is more popularly known
as the "Body Farm", a name used by crime author Patricia
Cornwell in a novel of the same name, which drew inspiration
from Dr. Bass and his work. Bass has also described the
body farm as "Death's Acre" and Beyond The Body Farm –
the title of the bestselling books on his life and career, cowritten
with journalist Jon Jefferson. Bass and Jefferson
have also written four fictional works, "Carved in Bone","Flesh and Bone", "The Devil's Bones" and "Bones of Betrayal"
under the pen name "Jefferson Bass." Bass is the
author of more than 200 scientific publications.
Dr. Bass attended the University of Virginia for his undergraduate
degree, and received his master's from the
University of Kentucky. He completed his PhD. in
Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1961.
His research career began as an archaeologist, excavating
Native American grave sites in the Midwest United States
during the 1950s. He mentions in Death's Acre, somewhat
humorously, that this activity earned him the informal title"Indian grave-robber number one" from the local Native
American leaders.

Fishing Rodeo at Watts Bar
2010
marks 33 years the Second District Dental
Society's Fishing Rodeo has been held
at Watts Bar Resort located next to
Watts Bar Dam on the Tennessee River.
As far as anyone can remember, the first
Dental Fishing Rodeo was held after World
War II by a few dentists who enjoyed
fishing. Thereafter, each year the group would
go to a different local TVA lake.
While he was President of the Second District
Dental Society Ben
Alley appointed me as chairman of
the fishing rodeo in a joking manner in
an effort to get me to attend the local
dental meetings. Ben
loved to fish, and I don't think he ever
missed a fishing rodeo. I had been to
Watts Bar Resort for family summer vacations
several times and had gotten to know the
owners, Joyce and Ed Probst. The location
was accessible to most of our members
so the rodeo was held there at Watts Bar
Resort.
Slowly, through the years the Rodeo evolved
into a family event. Many of our members
only attend one local dental meeting each
year, the Second District Dental Rodeo.
At some point through the years, Ben
named me "Permanent Chairman"
of the rodeo. However, the rodeo is and
has always been a committee- or group-sponsored
event.
About 10 years ago, Don Chase and Gary
McCown began a kid's fishing class to
teach the children of Second District
members the finer skills of fly fishing.
Since the second rodeo at Watts Bar, Dr.
David Etnier, UT professor of zoology
and nationally known ichthyologist has
been our judge. Later, Sam Venable, questionable
writer for the Knoxville News Sentinel
and Bill Landry, narrator for the Channel
10 award winning "Heartland Series,"
have helped to make the rodeo a success.
Our fishing rodeo is more about memories than about fishing.
It is a time of fellowship with our colleagues that live forever.
If you have never attended you must. Plan to take your family
to Watts Bar Lake. Click here to download the brochure and entry form.
